From Levanto the road climbs straight into the Montemarcello nature reserve, then drops to follow the river Vara. Of the 51.5 km, roughly half is unpaved, and the 2488 m of climbing keeps the legs honest. You roll past the clock tower, with its castle, before turning back to Levanto. A loop that keeps changing under your wheels from start to finish.
