The ride
Roll out of Brotterode and climb to the viewpoint on the southern Spießberg, then dive into the Spittergrund nature reserve. The route follows the Schmalkalde river before passing the Zechsteindiskordanz at the Auwallenburg railway cutting, another nature reserve. With 1322 m of climbing and 94% unpaved, it's a loop that keeps you working all the way back to Brotterode.
